The following competitions and events are participating in the Patient Safety Technology Challenge by injecting patient safety awards into their programs.  

Please keep in mind that students and innovators may be eligible to participate in more than one opportunity so please be sure to check this list frequently and sign up for emails to be notified when new competitions and events are added.

    The Patient Safety Technology Challenge Grand Awards bring together the creativity from dozens of competitions and hundreds of innovators from across the world! All participants* of past Patient Safety Technology Challenge sponsored competitions are invited to compete for a new prize pool of $25,000 cash!

    One team member from each of the selected six finalist teams will receive a travel & accommodation stipend to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to pitch on-stage at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) on January 9, 2025 in front of a live audience of innovators, investors, and consumers.

    This competition is funded by the Jewish Healthcare Foundation and administered by the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative.

    UCI Student Center

    IrvineHacks 2025 is Orange County's largest collegiate hackathon taking place from January 24th-26th at UCI. Hosted by Hack at UCI, this flagship event provides hackers with the opportunity to develop groundbreaking technical projects, network with well-known sponsors, engage in inspirational workshops from student organizations, and partake in social events. This year, Hack at UCI partnered with Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative to host a special prize category called the Patient Safety Technology Challenge. Join us at IrvineHacks 2025 and submit to the Patient Safety Technology Challenge to solve the problem of medical error and compete for incredible prizes!

    Hack@Brown is Brown University’s oldest and largest hackathon - open to all college students interested in software, hardware, and design. We’re excited to announce, for the first time, a patient safety workshop and a new patient safety track. Join us February 1-2 to develop projects that solve real-world problems, target prize tracks, or are just for fun!

    This 12-hour multi-disciplinary event is hosted by the Society of Critical Care Medicine in Orlando, connecting participants with other innovators, clinicians, researchers, industry leaders, investors, program officers and funders to spark meaningful change through innovation in critical care. In addition to feedback, resources, and new partnerships, participants will have a chance to increase their visibility in the critical care space. Topics covered span across pharmaceuticals, medical technology, big data, and AI.

    The Hollomon Health Innovation Challenge (HIC) is an exciting extracurricular student competition held each March at the University of Washington that encourages participants to dream up innovative solutions for big problems the world faces today related to health and healthcare. Each year, student teams submit novel business ideas describing medical devices, therapeutics, digital health interventions, healthcare delivery platforms, and more. These ideas are reviewed by nearly 150 expert judges from the local life science community who provided specific feedback on each idea and ultimately awarded nearly $40,000 in prize money to participating teams. This year the Best Idea for Patient Safety prize of $2,500 is being offered to highlight consumer-focused innovations in this field. Any undergraduate or graduate student in good standing from a Cascadia Corridor – Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia, as well as Alaska – college or university who is enrolled in a degree-seeking program is eligible to participate. 

    Prizes offered during the 2025 competition will include: 

      *   $15,000 Grand Prize 

      *   $10,000 Second Place Prize 

      *   $5,000 Third Place Prize 

      *   $2,500 Best Idea Prizes 

         *   Best Idea for a Medical Device 

         *   Bets Idea in Digital Health 

         *   Best Idea for Addressing Health Access and Disparities

    HackKU is KU’s annual 36-hour hackathon where top university talent gathers to push the envelope by creating innovative solutions to real-world problems, learning cutting-edge technical skills through attending workshops, and networking with industry-leading engineers who serve as mentors and judges throughout the weekend.  

    This year, hackers will have the option to compete to see who can create the best solution to solve a problem in the realm of patient health and safety!

    Utah's premier health care innovation competition, the Bench to Bedside (B2B) program offers students from all backgrounds the opportunity to learn from health care professionals about the problems facing day-to-day patient care, and develop tangible, innovative solutions. In our program, students have the opportunity to learn about the five leading patient safety challenges and how their solution can reduce patient harm and save lives.
